Customer Consultation: Pregnancy skin care woes!

Hi there,

I’m 3 months pregnant and my skin is going crazy. It’s gone from normal/combination to oily, with blemishes and a lot of impurities around my nose – blackheads etc. I think maybe I need an oil-free regime. Please help! I’m supposed to be glowing!

Helen

Hi Helen! Congratulations on the impending arrival!

From what you've told me, it sounds like your skin is just a little 'unsettled' (which is probably the hormones.) You mentioned that you'd rather oil-free products; but every oil functions differently and certain oils can be amazing at balancing the sebaceous glands and reducing oil production (ironically). The last thing we want to do is to attack it with drying products and unsettle it any more; the name of the game here is to restore balance and address the congestion you're describing.

My skin care recommendations are as follows – I've devised a complete regime for your reference as I wasn't sure which products you needed or whether you already have a cleanser you love, etc. I'm sure that even incorporating just one of the following products into your skin care routine will be beneficial.

Cleanser = Blissoma Fresh Mild Rice Cleanser

This is the cleanser I use, and probably one of my favourite products that we stock. I love it. Again, I know you said you wanted products without oil in them; but hear me out! I don't know if you've heard of the oil cleansing method, but it's a bit of a phenomena – you can read about it here. This cleanser uses the oil cleansing method, but the oils in this cleanser are combined with brown rice, which helps to remove the oil and 'cleanse' the complexion, leaving a soft, matte finish – as opposed to an oily finish. It's pretty ingenious, and it really works. I have combination skin and suffered from hormonal acne for years – and the Fresh Mild Rice Cleanser definitely improves my complexion. It also contains plantain to heal and reduce inflammation and antiseptic willow bark to reduce breakouts.

Toner = Aucocisco Naturals Citrus Astringent Toner

This toner will just go that extra mile to help reduce breakouts and reduce oil production. I would only use this once a day – either in the morning or at night, your choice; between cleansing and moisturising.

Like the Fresh Mild Rice Cleanser, it contains astringent willow bark extract, as well as aloe vera to soothe and healing oat kernel.

Moisturiser = Blissoma Awake Morning Facial Moisture/Peace Calming Evening Facial Crème

Either of these moisturisers would be wonderful – and despite the names, they can both be used both morning and night; they're not time-specific. They're both exceptional at balancing oil production and calming inflammation; they just do it using different ingredients. My advice would be to have a look at them both and see which one appeals to you the most. They're also both really light and matte on the skin, which is perfect under makeup. No greasy feel.

Face Mask = Raw Gaia Sun-dried Green Clay Face Pack

I think the best idea here is to keep things simple. We stock lots of different masks with amazing, purifying ingredients – but the rest of your routine should pretty much cover that. What the mask will do is to withdraw impurities and very gently exfoliate, to help slough off dead skin cells and encourage cell renewal (in other words, clear away the blemishes). This mask is suited to most skin types and is wonderfully detoxifying.

I hope this helps Helen. Don’t panic – we’ll have you back to gorgeous & glowing status in no time! Let me know how you go. :)

Eve :)
