We’ve received more than a few queries recently about toners – What do they do? When should I use them? Do I even need one?
Well, we’re here to answer your queries, and solve the toner mystery once and for all.
1. First: the biggest question – what do toners do?
Well, they serve a few purposes, actually.
- Toners ‘tone’ the skin.
A good toner will even out skin tone, reduce pore size and condition the skin.
- Toners remove excess makeup, dirt and product after cleansing.
We do our best – but let’s face it; sometimes we miss a spot during our daily cleanse. Toners go the extra mile to make sure we’ve removed the day – and this is important for all skin types, particularly if you wear makeup. Toners can be particularly helpful for removing eye makeup that your cleanser can’t quite shift.
- Toners prepare the skin for moisturisation.
Just as applying a primer helps to ‘prep’ the skin for makeup application, a toner helps to smooth the complexion and prepare it to absorb moisturiser.
- Toners can also ‘set’ your makeup – just apply a light spritz after makeup application, and whola!
- Toners can help to address specific skin care issues.
Your cleanser doesn’t stay on your skin; and your moisturiser serves primarily a hydrating function – so how do you take care of those other, niggling skin care concerns (enlarged pores, pigmentation or uneven skin tone, blemishes) – well, your toner can help here. There’s a toner for every skin type and concern – from mature and sensitive to acne-prone. Check out our range of 100% natural toners.
2. Okay, so now I know what a toner can do for my skin. But when and how should I use it?
Well, usually, a toner fits in after cleansing and before your serum/treatment/moisturising cream.
However, toners are also a fantastic alternative to wet wipes, as a way of removing makeup. Some of our customers have told us that in the morning they cleanse, tone and moisturise – but some evenings, they just can’t face the routine of their regular skin care regime; so they simply remove their makeup with their toner and a cotton ball, before applying their nightly hydration.
Toners can also be used to refresh and revive during hot weather or long-haul flights. Want to avoid that dehydrated, tired, red look that usually joins you at your destination after a long journey? Keep a natural toner handy and spritz it over your face during the flight for hydration. Our Oz Goddess Rehydrating Toner fits the bill perfectly, with its soothing rose and chamomile to calm inflammation.
3. So…. do I need a toner in my skin care regime?
Well, this one is up to you.
If you feel that your current, toner-free skin care regime is meeting your skin care needs, then by all means, stick with it. A toner is not imperative. But, if you have skin care issues that you feel aren’t being met and you just need that extra boost, whatever it may be – then adding a toner might help to fill this gap.
Personally, I think a toner is something you don’t think you need until you try one.
