The 4 ‘skin vitamins’, what they do for you & where to find them!
Vitamins. We take them in tablet-form for the health of our internal organs, but what about our largest, external organ – our skin? These vitamins can also be applied topically, and can work wonders for a whole host of skin conditions. So what are the all-important ‘skin vitamins’, and why should you include them in your skin care regime?
Arguably the most widely-toted as a skin vitamin, Vitamin E is well recognised as an antioxidant, and can help to protect the skin from toxins such as air pollution and ultraviolet radiation. Its antioxidant properties mean it enhances immune system functioning, and helps to fight free radicals. Vitamin E is commonly used as a treatment for scars, thanks to its ability to aid the skin’s natural healing process.

These compounds retain water and help to form new skin cells. It has also been found effective against UV damage, and as a treatment for psoriasis.

Vitamin D
Vitamin D is a ‘steroid vitamin’, which means it encourages the absorption and metabolism of calcium and phosphorous. For this reason, Vitamin D is incredibly important for our health, especially bone health. It also helps to regulate the immune system, and has anti-inflammatory properties.
Where can I get it?!
From the sun! Experts recommend at least 10-15 minutes of sun exposure twice a week on the face, arms, hands and back in order to maintain optimum Vitamin D levels. For more information on this, see this informative article from Medical News Today.
Vitamin D can also be taken in tablet-form, and is found in high amounts in oily fish, cheese and egg yolks.
