How to get the most out of your natural skin care

The beauty of switching to 100% natural skin care is that you no longer have to think about all the nasties you’re depositing onto your face and body on a daily basis – but this comes with a caveat.
Although the natural skin care on the market today is extremely advanced in terms of performance and the look and feel of the products, the fact remains that without synthetic preservatives, they usually don’t last as long as their mass-produced synthetic counterparts.
Most of the time, the shelf life of a natural skin care product is longer than it would take you to use up the product – but there are still a few rules you should follow to make sure your products stay as fresh and effective as possible for as long as possible.

1. Keep it cool.
Many natural skin care products lack the ingredients found in synthetic products that ‘hold’ the product together. A good example of this is our Raw Gaia range of products. All the Raw Gaia moisturisers are made with a beautiful blend of essential oils, teamed with cocoa butter.
Ideally, they should be solid but malleable – so that you can scoop some out and warm it in your fingers before applying. But if left in a warm environment, they can ‘liquify’ – that is, turn to liquid. Cooling the product again can cause it to become separated, so that the ingredients are not mixed as they should be.
For the product to perform in the way it was designed, it needs to be kept cool – and this is the same for many natural skin products.

2. Keep it dry.
This applies especially to those products that come in powder form; for example, our Mokosh Face Cleansing Powder or Raw Gaia Face Packs. Designed to be mixed with water before applying, it’s tempting to keep these products in the shower – but be careful here.
One of the reasons natural facial masks are created this way (in powder form) is to avoid the need for preservatives. Bacteria need water – so removing the water from a product removes the need to add preservatives. So, once you get water (even a drop!) in your jar of powder mask, it’s only a matter of time before the product begins to go off.
Our tip is to apply such products before you get in the shower. Take a heaped teaspoon-full of powdered mask and mix it in a bowl with equal parts water. Apply to your face, then jump in the shower.

3. Make sure your products are working together.
Most natural skin care products say something on the label like, ‘follow with our *insert brand name* toner and moisturiser’ – or, ‘for best results, team with our other *insert brand name* skin care products’.
Skin care doesn’t have to be this regimental – you can mix and match, and use a cleanser, toner and moisturiser from three different natural skin care ranges. However, you need to be sure that the products you’re using compliment each other.
It’s no use using three different products all designed for dry skin if the end result is an oil-slick complexion! It may be that you only need to address dryness with one product, and target other skin care issues during the rest of your regime.
The key here is to ask questions. Here at Eve Organics, we provide free personalised skin care consultations – no catches! Simply send us an email and tell us what your skin type is, your current skin care routine, and what specific issues you wish to address – and we’ll send you a complete, comprehensive skin care regime, complete with personalised advice and recommendations.
This way, you’ll know that the combination of products you choose will achieve the desired results. We know our skin care ranges like the back of our hands – so use us to your advantage!

Do you have any tried & tested tricks to help you get the most out of your natural skin care products? Let us know – we’d love to hear them!

Glowing Review: Our 100% Pure Tomato Lycopene Facial Cream

Every now & then we stumble across a review of one of the products in our range, and we simply have to share it!
The Tomato Lycopene Facial Cream by 100% Pure is a new addition to the range, and a miracle product for damaged and distressed complexions. Karley from Pure Beauty with Karley shares her thoughts on this wonder-in-a-bottle! :

Tomato Lycopene Facial Cream: A Closer Look

The way I have always looked at skin care is that we only have ONE skin. ONE face. You want to treat it with respect and nourish it with love–and wholesome ingredients! That is why I use 100% Pure skin care exclusively on my skin. One of those products used daily deserves a special feature on why I adore it so much and that’s why I’d like to talk about a fruit you probably have in your garden right now: tomatoes.

In addition to making a great BLT or homemade sauce, tomatoes are great for your skin. I think tomatoes are one of the most underrated skin foods out there. A recent study in Great Britain showed that regular consumption of lycopene-rich tomatoes can help protect skin from UVA damage as well as prevent premature aging. Tomatoes also benefit the skin when topically applied.  The main compound of this fruit is a carotene called LYCOPENE, which is a true antioxidant powerhouse.

At a conference at the Center for Food and Nutrition Policy at the Virginia Technical Institute, one subject discussed was a finding that lycopene in tomatoes may actually reduce sun damage by up to 35%!

In addition to these wonderful antioxidant properties, lycopene can also soften and smooth the skin to give it an ideal texture.  The tonic effects of the lycopene are also wonderful for balancing sebum in the skin.

One product from 100% Pure that I truly adore and would place into my top 3 favorites (which is oh so hard to do!) is the Tomato Lycopene Facial Cream. This is the facial moisturizer I have been using each morning.

I used to suffer from skin that was quite dry. Once I switched over to a regular regimen of 100% Pure products, it became normalized. No more dull, dry patches. Just NORMAL skin.  In the heat and humidity, I’ve had a bit of combination skin with t-zone oil like I did 15-20 years ago.  I needed to find a lighter facial moisturizer that I could use alone or with natural, mineral sunscreen. As you may know, using a natural sunscreen can wreak havoc on the pores so you need a light face cream instead of a heavy one.

I also know of many people with truly oily and acne prone skin who use this as well.

This is my favorite facial cream to use.  First of all, it is not a traditional, potted cream. It is in a pump bottle and is a lighter fluid. It is super gentle and doesn’t feel heavy on the skin.

Just look at the ingredients:

Ingredients:
Cucumber Juice, Tomato Extract, Organic Rose Hydrosol, Carrot Seed Oil, Tomato Lycopene, Organic Avocado Butter, Aloe Juice, Organic Pomegranate Seed Extract, Vitamin E (a-tocopherol), Vitamin C (ascorbyl palmitate), Extract of Organic Goldenseal, Organic Rosemary, Organic Oregano, Organic Thyme and Organic Lavender, Japanese Honeysuckle Extract, Citric Acid, Witch Hazel, Candelilla Wax and Calendula Extract

Why this works–a look at some of the key ingredients:

*Cucumber juice is the number one ingredient.  This soothing ingredient is also a skin tonic, and when combined with the tonic benefits of tomatoes, it helps clear the pores and get that “gunk” out of your skin.

*Rose hydrosol stimulates the skin and can also restore the pH balance of your skin.

*Carrot seed oil is present in this cream as well and I’d like to talk about why this is such a good thing.  Carrot seed oil contains high amounts of both Vitamin A and Carotene. Both are very potent antioxidants. When used on this skin, carrot seed can help to repair damage already done by free radicals. While many essential oils are not corrective, this is one that has shown to be both corrective and preventive.

Carrot Seed’s effect on the skin can be visible after just a few days of use, starting with a more radiant appearance. Often when our skin looks dull or sallow, carrot seed can help give it that “boost” we need.

People have found that skin infections have been treated well with carrot seed. Conditions such as psoriasis, contact dermatitis and eczema also can find some relief with this oil.

Those with mature skin can also reap the rewards of using this essential oil. It will make the skin softer, and can rejuvenate and tone the skin’s texture which results in a more youthful appearance.

*Avocado Butter softens the skin.  An effective anti-ager, it can also help restore skin elasticity and make it look more youthful and radiant.
*Aloe juice is something I believe is a must have in skin care. I am such a believer in aloe for the skin that I have purchased aloe vera juice to drink and have done this for years. It really is a wonderful ingredient and when I do not use products with aloe or when I go without drinking it, my skin suffers.Aloe can help repair damaged, irritated, sensitive, cracked, or burned skin. It is wonderfully soothing. It also contains Vitamin B1, B2, B6, and Vitamin C, as well as 20 amino acids. It is packed with nutrients which make it an ideal ingredient in skin care. It is skin protective and can act as a natural barrier to protect it from toxins.
*Organic Pomegranate Seed Extract is

EXCELLENT for the skin. It can help fight free radicals and is high in omega 5 fatty acids. It can help with cell growth and restore skin’s softness and elasticity.
*Vitamin E is a potent antioxidant which has also been shown to help minimize fine lines and wrinkles and fight off free radicals.

*Vitamin C

needs to be properly stabilized to provide maximum benefit. Have you ever had a vitamin C product that, once opened, quickly turns into a rusty brown shade? I think we all have.  That means that the vitamin C has oxidized. The Vitamin C in 100% Pure products is top-notch. Your skin will reap the anti-aging and antioxidant benefits, and this vitamin can brighten your skin too.

The Bottom Line:

If you have oily skin and haven’t found a moisturizer that doesn’t make you greasy or if you have an oily t-zone, or even normal skin–then this is for you!

Did you enjoy this review? Have you tried our 100% Pure Tomato Lycopene Facial Cream? We’d love to hear your thoughts!

Raw Gaia Clay Face Packs (Green/Rhassoul/Chocolate) = Facial Exfoliant

As well as withdrawing impurities, brightening uneven skin tone and refining texture, these powder masks exfoliate beautifully as you remove them; so they can save you money too (no need to buy an exfoliator to add to your regime!) – Simply pat on, leave for 10 minutes then rub gently in a circular motion in the shower, and whola – smooth, clearer, softer skin.

Ingredient Focus: Evening Primrose Oil

Evening Primrose Oil is quite an amazing ingredient, with incredible healing properties. It’s well known for its effect on hormone regulation,  and is used in the treatment of pre/post-menstrual syndrome,  menopause and endometriosis. Evening Primrose Oil contains a high concentration of gamma-linoleic acid or GLA, a fatty acid. GLA interferes with the production of prostaglandins during menstruation, lessening menstrual cramps and potentially decreasing other menstrual symptoms such as breast tenderness and cravings.

Evening Primrose Oil has has an equally healing effect on various skin conditions, including acne, eczema and rosacea. Some studies have indicated Evening Primrose Oil to have a significantly greater effect than a placebo on inflammation in eczema sufferers. Its ability to reduce inflammation also makes it effective against rosacea. The fatty acids in the oil work to dilute sebum, which is over-secreted in many acne sufferers.

3 makeup mistakes you don’t know you’re making

Forget blush overdose and clumpy mascara – here are 3 basic makeup mistakes that are simple to solve, and subtle enough that you might not even know you’re making them…

1. Not applying enough moisturiser
Do you skimp on moisturiser in case your complexion ends up looking oily..?
Don’t! Moisturising the skin before makeup application is essential for a number of reasons. Firstly, it nourishes and hydrates the skin like no makeup product can. It also creates a barrier between the skin and our cosmetics, smoothing and protecting the surface of the skin to allow for more even makeup application. Do you notice dry, flakey and cakey patches appearing on your face throughout the day? This can be down to a few things; but one of them is a lack of moisture. If you’re skimping on moisturiser because you’re afraid it will make your skin look oily, then you’re probably using the wrong moisturiser!
The trick is to choose a moisturiser that’s suited to your skin type:

For oily or combination skin, we love:
Oz Goddess Balancing MoisturiserMokosh Face Oil for Oily Skin

For dry, dehydrated skin, we love: 100% Pure Jasmine Green Tea Moisturiser, Mokosh Rich Face Cream

Aggressive anti-ageing without the chemicals!

For sensitive skin, we love: Raw Gaia Living Hemp Moisturiser

For acne-prone skin, we love: If your skin is very oily 100% Pure Purity Spot Treatment If your skin is dry in patches Oz Goddess Balancing Moisturiser

For mature skin, we love: The Little Alchemist Anti-Ageing Defense Complex, 100% Pure Super Fruits Reparative Cream

2. Skipping the primer
We think primer is one of those things you don’t realise you need, until you try it!
A good primer will ultimately double the performance of your foundation. Because primers are designed to smooth and prepare the surface of the skin for makeup
application, foundation goes on smoother, spreads better and more evenly, and stays on longer.
Because most synthetic primers contain silicones, it’s difficult to find a natural primer that performs in the same way, and gives the skin the same ‘slip’ that primers are so famous for.
We love Vapour Organic Beauty’s Stratus Instant Skin Perfector, available from the Vapour website.

3. Using the wrong colour foundation /concealer
This is a mistake made all-too-often!
The trick here is to avoid relying on your foundation to add colour and depth to your complexion. Your foundation should be the same colour as the skin on your face and neck – no darker. Once you’ve applied your foundation, you can then contour and add colour by using bronzer, highlighter or blush (or all three!).
Your under-eye concealer should be ever-so-slightly lighter than your foundation, to brighten the area. Yellow-toned concealers will help to disguise the blue in under-eye circles.
The concealer you use on your blemishes should be the same colour as your foundation, or slightly lighter if it’s not possible to get an exact match. Using a concealer in a green shade first can help to disguise redness in the skin.
Whether you should apply your concealer before or after your foundation is a topic of hot debate. We find that applying under-eye concealer first, then foundation, then concealing your blemishes, gets the best results – but this is a personal thing and will also depend on what kind of products you’re using. The easiest way to discover what works for you is to experiment!

Do you have any helpful tips for flawless makeup application? Have you tried any great natural makeup products? We’d love to hear your thoughts!
