Their culinary appeal is well established – but did you know that coffee and chocolate also offer health benefits, including the maintenance of healthy skin?
Coffee is the latest cult ingredient in eye creams and oils due to its ability to reduce inflammation and under-eye circles. A 1981 study conducted at Seoul National University found that the anti-inflammatory properties of caffeine were comparable to those of aspirin; whilst an earlier study conducted in 1979 at the University of Tennessee found that adding caffeine to topical anti-inflammatory treatments significantly increased their effectiveness.
Caffeine is also a vasodilator (it acts to dilate blood vessels), so it encourages blood flow around the eye, which is what makes it so effective against dark circles.
As well as being choc-full of antioxidants (pardon the pun!), a recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that people who ate chocolate or cocoa-containing foods experienced lower blood pressures and small improvements in blood vessel response to increases in circulation. The research also hinted that chocolate lovers had lower levels of insulin, the hormone that controls blood sugar.
Because of its antioxidant properties (raw chocolate is the highest known source of antioxidants), chocolate acts to fight free radicals and stimulate circulation, and may act to decrease the skin’s sensitivity to UV radiation.
“In a double-blind study in Germany, women who drank a cocoa beverage high in antioxidants called flavonols daily experienced reduced skin redness in response to UV-light exposure—15 percent less than usual after six weeks and 25 percent less at 12 weeks—while a group given a low-flavonol cocoa drink had no change. The women also showed significant improvements in their skins’ texture and hydration, which the investigators believe were attributable to measurably improved blood flow to the skin.” (Allure.com)

I have combination skin (oily T-section) but a lot of dry patches, mainly on hairline of forehead, corners of mouth, and nose. I’m in late 40s and skin is showing lots of ageing signs – redness, thinning, brown pigmentation blotches. When I think about it, the dryness might just be that I’ve been quite slack with my skincare for a while, so maybe I’ll just get more committed to that for a month and see how things improve. I’m happy with the cleanser and moisturiser I already have, but don’t have a scrub, mask or toner. I’ve ordered these from you. Maybe you could check my order to see whether the products I’ve chosen are appropriate for my skin?
I was planning on using the scrub twice per week – would you recommend this? – and if I do this, when would you advise using the mask?
I’m going to try the toner because I haven’t used one for ages (I’d thought I’d try it for a few weeks just on one side of my face and see whether I notice any difference) but I’m not convinced they’re necessary. I’ve heard the reasons: balancing ph (but surely one’s skin would do this by itself?), cleansing (but isn’t that what your cleanser is for?) and moisturising (again, isn’t that what my moisturiser does?). Do you have anything to say about toners??
Thanks for your input,
Hi Liz,You’re more than welcome, we’re here to help!I’ve come up with a complete skin care regime for you and will explain what each product can offer in terms of the skin care issues you’ve described. I’ve incorporated a cleanser, toner, moisturiser, and scrub/mask into my recommendations; so that you have a complete regime to refer to – but if you already have a cleanser and moisturiser that work for you, then that’s fantastic!
Recommended cleanser = Oz Goddess Milk CleanserThis cleanser is gentle, but effective. If your skin is oily in some areas and leaning towards dryness in others, it’s in need of some balance and some TLC. This cleanser contains sweet almond oil to hydrate and soothe, as well as lavender and ylang ylang essential oils to regulate sebum production and restore balance to the complexion.
Recommended toner = Raw Gaia Floral Face TonerThis toner contains lavender and neroli to balance oil production, as well as soothing and calming chamomile to reduce redness and inflammation.** To answer your question about toners – Toners are a product that a lot of people skip in their skin care regime, and in some cases a toner might be an unnecessary addition to your regime if your cleanser, moisturiser and regular mask/exfoliation/treatment are alleviating your skin care issues in themselves and leaving your complexion in a condition you’re happy with. However, toners do serve a few purposes – firstly, they effectively ‘tone’ the skin – they help to calm after cleansing, reduce pore size (depending on the toner’s ingredients), and remove any excess cleanser or dirt/makeup that the cleansing process missed. They also prepare the skin for moisturisation.Furthermore, toners can often treat issues that your cleanser and moisturiser can’t. Since your cleanser doesn’t stay on the skin, and your moisturiser usually serves mainly a hydrating purpose and restores moisture, a toner can combat any remaining issues such as puffiness, redness, oiliness or enlarged pores. However – if your moisturiser/mask/treatment contain ingredients that already take care of these issues, then a toner may not be necessary. It’s a personal choice, and depends on the other products in your skin care regime, and whether they meet your needs. **
Recommended moisturiser = 100% Pure Coffee Cherry Sun Damage Corrective CreamThis moisturiser serves two functions; it acts to ‘undo’ signs of sun damage, which include the redness and pigmentation you described. At the same time, it actively addresses skin ageing, with ingredients like antixodiant-rich green tea & green coffee, seabuckthorn oil and hyaluronic acid.
** At this point, you can tailor the remainder of your skin care routine to meet your needs. You can definitely use both a scrub and a mask in your routine, but in some cases your mask will exfoliate as you remove it, so you run the risk of ‘over-exfoliating’ if you use a scrub on top of this. To help you make this decision, I’ll explain the scrub and mask you’ve included in your order in a little more detail, and you can decide whether they’re right for you. **The Little Alchemist Lime & Papaya Exfoliating Micropolish = This scrub exfoliates with clay and ground walnut. It’s moisturising as well as exfoliating, so your skin won’t be left feeling dry or ‘stripped’. It also contains papaya extract, which will assist in exfoliation through the fruit enzymes it contains. This could also help with the pigmentation you described. I think you would find this scrub fine for your skin type, as long as you used gentle motions when using it – so as not to exacerbate the redness in your skin. It also smells delicious, which is a bonus! The Raw Gaia Raw Chocolate Face Pack = This is one of my favourite products in the range, and is incredibly effective. It contains alma fruit powder, also known as the ‘Indian gooseberry’. This fruit has amazing brightening properties, so it’s fantastic for dull or uneven skin tones, and could assist in reducing your pigmentation/dark spots. It also contains organic raw chocolate powder, which is the highest known source of antioxidants in the world. This mask does exfoliate slightly as it’s removed, so again, I would advise you to remove it gently (I use it in the shower and gently wash it off under a continuous flow of water.)If you want to incorporate both the Little Alchemist Lime & Papaya Exfoliating Micropolish and the Raw Gaia Raw Chocolate Face Pack into your routine (and they’re both beautiful products), I would start alternating them once a week – so use the exfoliating micropolish one week, then the chocolate face pack the next, and so on – and if you feel this isn’t renewing the skin enough and it still feels a bit patchy/dull and in need of more exfoliation, then increase it to twice a week, still alternating between the two products. If you would rather choose just one of the two, I would go with the Raw Gaia Raw Chocolate Face Pack.As an alternative option, you could also try the 100% Pure Nourishing Carrot Facial Scrub, as this too would work well for your skin type.I hope this information helps, Liz, and assists you in choosing the right products for you.
Overall, for your skin type, your cleanser should be gentle and balancing (not oil-stripping, as this doesn’t help with oil production in the long term); your toner should address your oily t-zone and redness; your moisturiser should protect, hydrate and provide nutrients; and your scrub and/or mask should detoxify, withdraw any impurities, and also help to re-balance oil production over the long term.
Do be aware that whenever you change your skin care routine, an adjustment period is necessary so that your skin can renew itself and the new layer of skin cells can adjust to the skin care products. This is especially evident when you change from commercial skin care to 100% natural skin care – the skin undergoes what could be referred to as a ‘detoxification period’ of at least a month or so – so give it a little while to settle before deciding if the products are working for you.
Did you find this information helpful? Remember, whatever you’re experiencing, there are probably hundreds of other women out there with the same skin care issue and with similar questions.
If you’d like a personalised skin care consultation like Liz’s, get in touch with us. We won’t publish your query on our blog unless we obtain your permission to do so – so don’t worry! All skin care consultations are by email and are kept confidential unless agreed otherwise.

‘Age spots’ are areas of pigmentation on the skin, also known as ‘liver spots’ – but in fact, neither term is entirely accurate.
These pockets of pigmentation are actually caused by sun exposure – so the term ‘sun spots’ is the most appropriate one. They are caused by damage to melanocytes; skin cells in the epidermis (the surface layer of the skin) that produce melanin. Anyone can develop sun spots, young or old.
… So, now that you can rest assured that the dark spots on your complexion aren’t just a sign that you’re ‘getting on’ – what can you do about them? Well, as always, prevention is better than cure; so let’s start with that!
1. Sun Protection
Whilst we do need around 10-15 minutes of sunlight every day to satisfy our Vitamin D requirement, it’s a good idea to try and keep your face out of the sun whenever possible, and of course, always wear a broad spectrum sunscreen.
Eve Organics stocks a range of 100% natural, skin-loving daily moisturisers that contain an SPF factor – such as our 100% Pure Pomegranate Antioxidant Hydration (SPF 20) and our 100% Pure Argan Oil Hydration Moisturiser (SPF 30). But what if I already have sun spots?, we hear you ask. Well, fortunately, the pigmentation can be treated. There are various ways to combat sun spots, and the first is by exfoliation.
A wonderful product for brightening the skin, combatting pigmentation and balancing uneven skin tones is our Raw Gaia Raw Chocolate Face Pack. It contains the revolutionary Amla Fruit, also known as the Indian Gooseberry, which has incredible brightening effects. Simply apply this chocolate-y treat once a week and leave on for ten minutes. Another option is our 100% Pure Cherry Honey Facial Scrub, which contains skin-brightening berries including cherries, strawberries, raspberries and cranberries. (Yum!).
3. Brightening skin care
It’s not just exfoliation that can help to brighten the complexion and reduce pigmentation. We also stock an entire range of products designed specifically for this purpose – our 100% Pure Brightening range, which includes a cleanser, mask and night balm.
4. Targeted treatments
Remember: whatever you call them, sun spots are caused by sun damage. There are products available that have been specifically formulated for sun damaged skin, which help to reduce the signs of ageing and overexposure to the sun. One such product is our beautiful The Little Alchemist Ultra-C Radiance Serum, which contains calendula, vitamin A, seabuckthorn oil and a host of anti-aging ingredients. Apply this before bed every night, and watch your age spots diminish and your youthful radiance return! So there you have it! There are lots of things you can do to combat your age/sun spots and help to restore and brighten your complexion – all without using a single chemical or harmful ingredients.
And remember, age spots are caused by overexposure to the sun – so cover up and keep your skin protected; it’s yours for life!
… Until next time xx
Christmas is approaching fast, (yes! We love christmas!) so we thought we’d prepare a little helpful list – not for Santa, but for you!

We’ve put a lot of thought into this list – so sit back, save time, and get your christmas shopping in early – we’ve done the work for you!
After all… who doesn’t want beautiful & glowing skin for christmas?
Best product for teenagers = Raw Gaia Raw Chocolate Face Pack
Why? = This luxurious face mask clarifies and brightens all skin types – but it’s particularly good for oily, combination or acne-prone skin. It contains sundried red clay to draw out impurities, organic raw chocolate powder – the world’s highest known source of antioxidants, apart from smelling divine – tumeric, which is a known acne-fighter and excellent at purifying oily skin types, and amla fruit powder to clear and brighten the complexion.
This wonder-product not only has an amazing effect on troubled skin, it also smells heavenly and is fun and quick to use – perfect for teens!
Best pore-refining product = Mokosh Cleansing Powder, Healing Anthropology Purifying Facial Exfoliant
Why? = These little jars of powdered love are saviours for enlarged pores or unrefined, dull skin. They have the effect of applying a primer – they make pores disappear before your eyes. (Honestly!). They do this by getting in there and gently cleaning out those pores, whilst toning, refining and balancing the complexion, with ingredients like green clay, wheatgrass powder and the skin-loving oatmeal (Mokosh), calendula flower, rose petals and jojoba meal (Healing Anthropology).
As if that wasn’t enough, both of these beautiful products also double as weekly masks – so they’re real time- and money- savers, and perfect for mums or those who are short on spare time in their daily routine.
Most luxurious anti-aging moisturiser = The Little Alchemist Anti-Aging Defence Complex
Why? = This product is just too gorgeous. The packaging is sophisticated and feminine, and the product inside smells wonderful, is packed with natural anti-aging ingredients (DMAE, alpha-lipoic acid, MSM, seabuckthorn oil, hyaluronic acid, gingko, ginseng and Co-Enzyme Q10 – phew!) and sinks in to the skin beautifully. It’s a pleasure to use, and looks perfect on the bathroom shelf! Mum or Nan will love you for it.
Best gift for the traveller in your life = Invoke Rose Toning Mist
Why? = This product is a MUST for jet-setters. Not only does it tone and refine the skin, as all toners are made to, but it has the added benefit of soothing ingredients like cucumber and chamomile, which calm, de-puff and revitalise. No more red, irritated skin or puffy eyes when you touch down! This toning mist also contains floral waters of rose and neroli to add moisture (so it keeps your skin hydrated too), and lavender to balance. We road-tested this on a recent longhaul flight and it was absolutely fantastic. No redness or puffiness what-so-ever – our bloodshot eyes were the only giveaway!
Best Product for Busy Mums = Balm Balm Fragrance Free Face Balm
Why? = This product is a multi-use miracle. Made with the simplest and gentlest of ingredients, it’s made as a moisturiser for very sensitive skins, but also doubles as a glossy lip balm, hair smoother (yes, it works – we’ve tried it!) and more importantly, a gentle and safe balm for baby’s skin. New mums can keep this little tube in their handbag and throw away their lip balm, hair serum and baby lotion! It’s a time-saver and a much safer and gentler alternative to commercial baby products, containing only shea butter, sunflower oil, beeswax, calendula and jojoba oil. Beautifully soothing and beautifully simple! = Just what frazzled mums need.
Has that given you some food for thought? We hope we’ve helped with our christmas picks list!
