Age spots – 4 simple solutions you can start right now!
‘Age spots’ are areas of pigmentation on the skin, also known as ‘liver spots’ – but in fact, neither term is entirely accurate.
These pockets of pigmentation are actually caused by sun exposure – so the term ‘sun spots’ is the most appropriate one. They are caused by damage to melanocytes; skin cells in the epidermis (the surface layer of the skin) that produce melanin. Anyone can develop sun spots, young or old.
… So, now that you can rest assured that the dark spots on your complexion aren’t just a sign that you’re ‘getting on’ – what can you do about them? Well, as always, prevention is better than cure; so let’s start with that!
1. Sun Protection
Whilst we do need around 10-15 minutes of sunlight every day to satisfy our Vitamin D requirement, it’s a good idea to try and keep your face out of the sun whenever possible, and of course, always wear a broad spectrum sunscreen.
Eve Organics stocks a range of 100% natural, skin-loving daily moisturisers that contain an SPF factor – such as our 100% Pure Pomegranate Antioxidant Hydration (SPF 20) and our 100% Pure Argan Oil Hydration Moisturiser (SPF 30). But what if I already have sun spots?, we hear you ask. Well, fortunately, the pigmentation can be treated. There are various ways to combat sun spots, and the first is by exfoliation.
2. Exfoliation
A wonderful product for brightening the skin, combatting pigmentation and balancing uneven skin tones is our Raw Gaia Raw Chocolate Face Pack. It contains the revolutionary Amla Fruit, also known as the Indian Gooseberry, which has incredible brightening effects. Simply apply this chocolate-y treat once a week and leave on for ten minutes. Another option is our 100% Pure Cherry Honey Facial Scrub, which contains skin-brightening berries including cherries, strawberries, raspberries and cranberries. (Yum!).
3. Brightening skin care
It’s not just exfoliation that can help to brighten the complexion and reduce pigmentation. We also stock an entire range of products designed specifically for this purpose – our 100% Pure Brightening range, which includes a cleanser, mask and night balm.
4. Targeted treatments
Remember: whatever you call them, sun spots are caused by sun damage. There are products available that have been specifically formulated for sun damaged skin, which help to reduce the signs of ageing and overexposure to the sun. One such product is our beautiful The Little Alchemist Ultra-C Radiance Serum, which contains calendula, vitamin A, seabuckthorn oil and a host of anti-aging ingredients. Apply this before bed every night, and watch your age spots diminish and your youthful radiance return! So there you have it! There are lots of things you can do to combat your age/sun spots and help to restore and brighten your complexion – all without using a single chemical or harmful ingredients.
And remember, age spots are caused by overexposure to the sun – so cover up and keep your skin protected; it’s yours for life!
… Until next time xx
