Some Common Skincare Ingredients to Watch Out For

We’ve told you all about the gorgeous natural ingredients that are in Eve Organics – but what WON’T you find in our ingredients lists?

Here is a list of nasty ingredients found in nearly all off-the-shelf skincare products, and how they can be harmful not just to your skin, but to your overall health & wellbeing.

As an exercise, go and have a look at some of your brand-name skincare products (if you own any) and check on the labels for these ingredients. If you find any, it’s time to switch to 100% natural Eve Organics skincare and start putting healthy ingredients on your skin.

Diethanolamine (DEA) – Also known as ‘Cocamide DEA’

This ingredient is a suspected carcinogen (cancer-causing agent) and has been shown to cause tumours in the liver and kidneys of animals.

Dimethicone

This is an extremely common one. Not only will you find this product in skincare, but in cosmetic products also, including some “mineral” foundations. Dimethicone is a form of silica, and has been listed as an eye and skin irritant. Some studies have linked dimethicone to tumours in the lungs and endocrine (hormone) system. The full toxicology of this ingredient is still not known, but the Environmental Canada Domestic Substances List has named Dimethicone as a bioaccumulative substance in humans and wildlife. This means that it ‘accumulates’ in the organs.

Methyl & Propyl Paraben

Parabens are often listed as “safe” preservatives, especially when used in small quantities. However, methyl and propyl parabens mimic the sex hormone oestrogen, known to play a role in breast cancer – and parabens have repeatedly been found in breast cancer tumours.

Phenoxyethanol

Phenoxyethanol is created from Benzene, a known carcinogen (cancer-causing) and has been listed as being toxic to the bladder and kidneys and a severe eye irritant. Phenoxyethanol has been linked to reproductive disorders, brain degeneration and nervous system depression.

Propylene Glycol

Propylene glycol is a solvent, commonly found in hydraulic and brake fluid, paint, tobacco, and – you guessed it – skincare products. It causes nervous system and intestinal problems if ingested, and has been shown to cause liver & kidney damage, and restrict the growth of new skin cells.

Sodium Laureth Sulfate

Another common one. You’ll find SLS in nearly every shampoo on the market, as well as in most commercial foaming cleansers. It is used as a surfactant, or ‘foaming’ agent designed to help products to lather, but it is composed of 4 known carcinogens (cancer-causers): acetaldehyde, dioxane, ethylene oxide, and acetaldehyde.

Triethanolamine (TEA)

This ingredient has been found to be severely irritating to body tissue and eyes, and can react with notrosating agents to form “nitrosamines”, which are known carcinogens.

The low-down: We hope we haven’t scared you too much… but our advice is to try and avoid these products if you can! All Eve Organics products are 100% natural, so are totally free of harmful and synthetic ingredients of any kind.
But, not all skincare is equal. Even some ‘natural’ and ‘organic’ skincare brands are guilty of including these ingredients in their formulas. Sometimes a product will be advertised as “paraben free”, but will then contain phenoxyethanol in its ingredient list instead.
Don’t be fooled by “fragrance free”, “paraben free” or “preservative free” claims – make sure your skincare is free of EVERYTHING nasty – and always check your ingredients labels!
