Homemade skin care recipes

Sometimes, half the fun of using natural skin care is in the juicing, mashing and mixing!

So, we thought we’d provide you with some of our favourite natural skin care recipes – homemade skin care for those lazy holiday afternoons!

Homemade skin care is as fresh as it gets, and using raw ingredients means maximum nutrients, for a glowing, revitalised complexion.

Since we’re coming into summer here in Australia, we thought we’d start with a delicious tropical scrub for the face and body = our mango miracle mask!

Homemade Mango Miracle Mask

1 ripe, organic mango
1 tbsp honey
1/2 tsbp extra virgin olive oil
1 cup raw sugar

Mash up the mango, then add the honey and olive oil and mix until blended. Stir in the sugar.

Just before hopping in the shower, massage the mixture into dry skin, on the face, neck and any body areas that need some pampering!
Allow the mixture to remain on the skin for several minutes to sink in. (You can wash your hair while waiting – that’s what we do!)
Rinse off, and enjoy your glowing new summer skin!

The Bottled Version = Try our Little Alchemist Lime & Papaya Exfoliating Polish. This zesty scrub contains papaya & green tea extracts, as well as tangerine and lime essential oils, and shea butter to moisturise. It’s the perfecting smoothing, softening tropical scrub!

Next up, here’s a recipe for at-home brightening, without the nasty chemicals! Did you know that most whitening & brightening products contain ‘hydroquinone’, thought to be carcinogenic (cancer-causing)?
Get rid of pigmentation and uneven skin tone the natural way using homemade skin care – with our Luscious Lemon Brightening Mask.

Homemade Luscious Lemon Brightening Mask

2 tbsp honey
4 tsp lemon juice
3 tsp organic natural yoghurt
1 egg white

Mix all the ingredients in a bowl and whisk until the mixture thickens.

Apply to a clean, dry face and leave on for 10-12 minutes. Rinse clean. Use this mask twice a week and say hello to brighter, clearer skin! (You can refridgerate the mixture as long as you use each batch within 1 week of preparation.)

The Bottled Version = Try our gorgeous Little Alchemist Ultra-C Radiance Serum - this little beauty contains Vitamin A and rosehip oil to combat uneven pigmentation and age spots, as well as containing calendula and evening primrose oil to calm and balance. It’s heaven in a bottle!

So, now that we’ve got the masks & scrubs covered, what about a natural homemade cleanser? Well, that’s where our Oats So Smooth! cleansing paste comes in! This beautiful homemade skin care recipe is all you need for smooth, hydrated skin – and it’s so easy to make!

Homemade Oats So Smooth! Cleansing Paste

1 tbsp natural organic yoghurt
1/4 cup oatmeal or cornmeal

Mix the ingredients to form a paste. Leave to sit for 1- minutes.

Smooth over the face, massaging into the skin as you rinse off. Then feel your baby soft skin!

The Bottled Version = try our Mokosh Face Cleansing Powder. Made with skin-loving ingredients like oatmeal, need powder, green clay and wheatgrass powder, it can be used as a daily cleanser and as a weekly mask – and it leaves the skin impossibly smooth!

And finally, a homemade skin care recipe for those tired or puffy peepers – our Creamy Cocoa Eye Concoction. This soothing cream is deeply hydrating and will smooth out fine lines, so you wake up with beautifully bright eyes!

Homemade Creamy Cocoa Eye Concoction

1 tsp cocoa butter
1/2 tsp almond oil
1/2 tsp wheatgerm oil
pinch of finely chopped rosemary

Mix all the ingredients into a smooth paste.

Apply gently to the eye area using your ring finger (it applies the least pressure of all the fingers so is perfect for dabbing around the eye area.) Wake up to gorgeous, smoothed eyes!

The Bottled Version = Try our Healing Anthropology Rejuvenating Eye Repair. It works fast at combatting the three major eye issues – dark circles, puffiness and fine lines. That’s because it contains a host of effective natural ingredients – like licorice and white oak bark to calm inflammation, carrot root oil to brighten, and jojoba oil and shea butter to smooth and hydrate.

    Hi Mia,
So glad you enjoyed the post – that’s fantastic that you’re making your own hair products – great to hear! Apart from using essential oils, perhaps you could use vanilla pods, or real coffee? One of our products contains organic madagascan vanilla beans, and it smells gorgeous. Raw chocolate powder and cocoa butter also work well to add a creamy, warm scent.
Let us know how you go! :)

  22. Mia says:

Hi there, yep being a mixtress is tricky. I have been trying some mixes lately, and to be honest it takes too much tweaking and reformulating, etc … i find that although i fancy myself the mixtress, i’d rather just buy! Having said that, just an hour ago, i made a hair butter which i am quite pleased with, and i also made a hair custard, which was so so, i think i didn’t work out the right % of PS20 (emulsifier).
When i read ingredients at the back of a product i like, i am always like: “i can make this, psssstttt”, but working out the right formulation is time (and money) consuming! so i have decided to make the odd butter here and there but mostly to buy ready-made products.

What frustrates me the most is that i can never find the right scents, meaning the fragranced oils i buy all have that synthetic smell. If you (or anyone reading this) knows a website where i can buy “natural-smelling” fragranced oils, i’d be very grateful! i like smells like cake batter, coffee, caramel, burned sugar, those sweet smells, and citrus smells. Sometimes EOs just don’t do it in the right quantity, for a stronger smell, i would have to go over the recommended dosage.
I do use preservatives in my homemade products (usually phenoxyethanol) to prevent the little monsters from thinking it’s xmas everyday (in my lovely murumuru and capuacu mixes! :)

You always have such interesting posts! Thanks for providing some neurone stimulation to a new first time mum at home for now (i swear baby talk will drive me insane eventually, and hubby is not a scientist :) )
